Camera Shots

There are 8 basic camera shots that a director will use when deciding on what shot to use for a particular scene.

Establishing Shot- This is usually the first shot of a new scene, designed for showing the audience where the action is taking place. It is usually a very wide shot or an extreme long shot.

Long Shot- This is very similar to an establishing shot but the director moves much closer to the subject/actors.

Medium Long Shot- This is closer to the actor and their environment. The director could be showing       something of importance to the actor.

Medium Shot/ Mid Shot- There will be space for hand gestures in the frame, bottom of the frame will pass roughly through the waist.

Medium Close Up- Head and shoulders of the character, usually shown to around mid upper arm.

Close Up- Shot of head and top of the shoulders only. They are used regularly with with medium and long shot.

Big Close Up- Shows the actors face to show emotion. Usually, some of the head will be cut off.

Extreme Close Up- Takes you straight to the character again to show emotion. This usually involves the mouth, eyes or nose.
